Meet Our Heroes

Supervised contact refers to the monitored interactions between a child and their non-residential parent or other family members. This ensures the child's safety and well-being while maintaining important family relationships.

Supervised contact is typically recommended in situations involving concerns about a child's safety, such as cases of domestic violence, substance abuse, or mental health issues. It ensures that the child can maintain a relationship with the non-residential parent in a safe environment.

During supervised contact sessions, a trained supervisor, usually an Independent Social Worker (ISW) observes the interactions between the child and the visiting parent. The supervisor ensures the safety of the child, intervenes if necessary, and provides support to facilitate positive interactions.

Supervised contact sessions can take place in various settings, including dedicated contact centers, community centers, or other neutral locations. The setting is chosen to ensure the comfort and safety of the child and the supervising staff.

The frequency of supervised contact sessions is determined based on the needs and circumstances of the child and family. It can range from a few hours per week to more frequent visits, as agreed upon by the involved parties and professionals.

Majority of our supervisors are qualified Independent Social Work professionals with extensive experience in child protection and family support. They are trained to handle sensitive situations, ensure child safety, and facilitate positive interactions during supervised contact sessions.

Yes, supervised contact can progress to unsupervised contact if it is deemed safe and appropriate. Regular assessments are conducted to evaluate the progress and ensure that the child's safety and well-being are maintained.

You can request supervised contact services by contacting us through our website, phone, or email. We will guide you through the process, including completing a referral form and scheduling

To ensure the safety and well-being of children during supervised contact sessions, we employ highly qualified and trained staff, conduct rigorous background checks, and maintain secure, child-friendly environments. Our protocols and procedures are designed to handle emergencies and safeguard breaches, while continuous monitoring and clear communication with relevant authorities reinforce our commitment to child protection. Additionally, we adhere to strict confidentiality and data protection policies, regularly review our practices, and seek feedback to constantly improve our services.

We handle confidentiality and data protection in supervised contact sessions by implementing stringent measures to safeguard personal information. All sensitive documents, such as referral forms and contact reports, are securely stored and password-protected. Our staff undergo regular training on data protection policies, ensuring compliance with regulations such as GDPR. We limit access to personal data to authorized personnel only, and follow strict procedures for data handling and storage within our organization. Additionally, we continuously review and update our data protection practices to ensure the highest standards of confidentiality are maintained.

Our long-standing partners include Buckinghamshire Council and Brent Council, with whom we have collaborated for over 2 years, successfully assisting over 350 families and supervising more than 800 sessions. We also work closely with Barnet, Camden, Sussex, Wiltshire, Manchester, Brent, Cornwall, Surrey, Harrow and Lewisham councils, establishing strong partnerships to provide effective supervised contact services across these regions.

We measure the effectiveness and quality of our supervised contact services through regular feedback from stakeholders, tracking key outcomes, conducting compliance audits, continuous staff training, and analyzing session data. These methods ensure we maintain high standards and continually improve our services to meet the needs of families.

Yes, we are accredited by the National Association of Child Contact Centres (NACCC), the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), and the British Association of Social Workers (BASW). These accreditations reflect our commitment to maintaining high standards in our services and adherence to regulatory guidelines.

My Story at Parent Help

From Passion to Profession: Fortune's Journey in Social Work

Hi, I'm Fortune, a qualified social worker with over a decade of experience. I have worked in both non-governmental and governmental settings, specifically in the disability sector, crime and justice sector, and the children's sector. For the past six years, I've focused on the children's sector, conducting child and family assessments to support families and mitigate risks identified in referrals. Additionally, I have supervised family contacts for about two or three years, ensuring safe interactions between parents and children when necessary. That's a brief overview of my professional experience.

That's an impressive and comprehensive background in social work, Fortune. Can you tell us what inspired you to become a social worker?

I initially tried to avoid social work, but it seems to be my calling. My father worked in social welfare services, and I found myself naturally drawn to this field. They say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, and that's certainly true in my case.

How did you find the transition from your home country to here?

The transition was smoother for me because I arrived during the summer and had several friends from university already in the UK. This support network helped me settle in both professionally and socially. Work-wise, I encountered new practices, such as supervised contact, which was unfamiliar to me. However, I now understand its importance in ensuring the safety and well-being of children. Having a supportive team is crucial for anyone moving from abroad, as it greatly aids in adjusting to both the job and the social environment.

That's great to hear. Your experience transitioning and fitting in is inspiring. What advice would you give to someone considering a career in social work or contact work with Parent Help?

My advice is to have a genuine passion for the social welfare sector. While challenging, it is also professionally rewarding. It's essential to embody social work principles, such as non-judgmental attitudes and a commitment to advancing the welfare and rights of families. Listening to the child's voice is paramount, as our goal is to create an environment conducive to their development and well-being.

What advice would you give to clients seeking services from Parent Help?

I would advise parents that Parent Help is highly professional and produces timely reports. Often, parents seeking our services may be in conflict, but Parent Help remains neutral and aims to support the family so the child can have contact with the other parent without being involved in parental disputes.

That's very helpful. What do you specifically enjoy about working in social work?

I enjoy meeting new people, hearing their stories, and helping them navigate their challenges. As a parent, I also learn from other parents' experiences. It's rewarding to see the progress children make and the strengthening of their bonds with their parents. Witnessing positive changes and outcomes is incredibly fulfilling.

Great insights. Lastly, what would be your closing comments to anyone reading or listening to this interview?

I'm very satisfied with Parent Help. They are professional and flexible with scheduling for supervising contacts. Payments are timely, which ensures a positive working relationship. Knowing you'll be paid on time is a significant relief and contributes to job satisfaction.

Thank you, Fortune.

My Story at Parent Help

The Power of Listening: Remi Baganza's Approach to Mental Health and Contact Supervision

My name is Remi Baganza. I have been in social work for almost three years now. I am a social worker and a senior mental health practitioner here at Mind. I work with adults experiencing various mental health issues. I hold an ASYE (Assessed and Supported Year in Employment) in both children and adults, allowing me to work with children and young adults aged 16 to 25.

Amazing, Remi. You're doing great work. Mental health is such an important field.

I love it.

It is fascinating. So, what inspired you to pursue social work?

The main thing that inspired me was the support I received when I first moved to this country. Friends, family, and the community were incredibly supportive, especially when I became a parent. That support was crucial during a time of many changes, and it inspired me to want to make a difference in other people's lives. The support I received made me want to give back and help others.

That's wonderful. When did you come to the country?

It's been about 19 years now.

Yes, it might be a long time, but impactful experiences often feel like they happened recently.

Exactly. The experience is still fresh, especially becoming a new mom. Having the support from family and friends helped me not feel overwhelmed by the experience and inspired me to give back.

That's amazing. Can you share any personal experiences or influences that led you to choose social work?

It felt natural to want to help others facing difficulties because that's what I would hope for if I were in their situation. The support I received made me inclined to help others in return.

How do your personal values align with the principles of social work?

Empathy is a core value for me. Practicing in a person-centered and empathetic way allows me to understand what people are going through. This helps break down barriers, build rapport and trust, and enables long-term support. Listening is also crucial. Often, we may be the first to truly listen to someone's story, which validates their needs and encourages them to open up. Being non-judgmental is essential as well, providing a safe space for people to explore their stories without fear of judgment fosters connection and trust.

Absolutely. Being a good listener and showing empathy can make a huge difference.

It truly does. Sometimes, just being human and relatable, rather than always wearing the professional jacket, can make a significant impact.

Working in mental health can be emotionally draining. How do you manage those emotions?

It can be demanding, but I practice comfortable detachment. Being present without taking on everything personally helps. Self-care, seeking supervision, and talking to colleagues are vital. Setting boundaries and looking after myself ensures I can be effective in my role.

How do you integrate your personal values into contact supervision with Parent Help?

Empathy plays a significant role. For example, I once supervised a father going through a tough time similar to my own experience as a parent. Showing empathy allowed him to open up more. He appreciated that I wasn't just there to take notes but to support him genuinely.

What aspect of social work or contact supervision do you find most fulfilling?

Making a positive impact by empowering parents, especially fathers, is very rewarding. Highlighting their strengths and supporting them in building relationships with their children is fulfilling. Also, promoting fairness and social justice, even indirectly, by facilitating equal parenting opportunities is important.

It's clear you thrive on making positive contributions.

Absolutely. Seeing someone smile or achieve something they thought impossible is incredibly fulfilling. Reminding people that their mental health doesn't define them and that they can still lead fulfilling lives is powerful.

How do you see the role of social work evolving in the future, and how do you hope to contribute?

Understanding the challenges and dedication required in social work is crucial. Staying informed about social care legislation and developing self-care strategies for resilience are essential. I hope to contribute by advocating for comprehensive support and promoting continuous learning and improvement.

Finally, what advice would you give to someone considering social work or contact supervision?

Be open-minded, a good listener, and willing to be challenged. Bring empathy and compassion to your work. Listening is powerful and helps validate others' experiences. In contact supervision, facilitating positive interactions and supporting families through difficult transitions can make a significant difference.

My Story at Parent Help

The Power of Listening: Remy Baganza's Approach to Mental Health and Contact Supervision

Bethany, thank you for joining us today. Could you please introduce yourself, outlining your qualifications, training, and your experience as a social worker?

Thank you for having me. I'm Bethany Erickson Rodriguez, an independent senior social worker with several years of experience. I obtained my social work degree in Canada in 2003 and shortly after moved to the UK, where I began working in a family centre within child protection in Surrey. Over the years, I've specialized in children's services and fostering, with approximately half of my experience dedicated to child protection and the remaining focused on fostering services. I've pursued various post-qualifying education and certifications to enhance my skills in this field. Until 2018, I worked directly with a local authority and fostering services, and since 2019, I've been working independently with organizations like Parent-Help.

What inspired you to pursue this particular profession?

Initially, I was drawn to the idea of helping people, but it was my experiences working for nonprofit organisations that solidified my passion for social work. Witnessing the impact of assisting individuals in realising their potential and overcoming challenges fueled my desire to advocate for others. My journey began with career counselling, where I helped individuals in social services discover their skills and opportunities. This experience underscored the transformative power of support and guidance, reinforcing my commitment to social work. While child protection may have its challenges, I believe in its fundamental purpose and the potential for positive change within the system.

Can you share any personal experiences or influences that led you to choose this career path?

Absolutely. My inspiration stems from my upbringing within a family deeply committed to social justice and community service. My parents, particularly my father, who is a professor of anthropology, instilled in me a sense of responsibility towards those in need. Witnessing my mother's work with asylum seekers and marginalised communities further fueled my passion for social justice. Additionally, experiences such as observing the challenges faced by families living across the street from us and hearing about my father's teaching stint in Africa profoundly impacted my worldview. Moreover, individuals like Meghan Markle, who advocate for social change and empowerment, have served as inspirations for me. Their messages of perseverance and the belief in the power of incremental change deeply resonate with my approach to social work.

How do your personal values align with the principles of social work?

My values centre around community, integrity, and accountability. I believe in the importance of fostering a sense of belonging and support within every community I engage with. Furthermore, I strive to embody integrity and accountability in my interactions, serving as a role model for others. Therapeutic support and the provision of a safe, non-judgmental environment are also fundamental aspects of my practice. I believe in approaching every situation with empathy and a commitment to understanding the unique needs of each individual or family.

What aspects of social work do you find most fulfilling or rewarding?

For me, the most fulfilling aspect of social work lies in witnessing positive change and transformation in the lives of those I serve. Whether it's supporting a family through a crisis or empowering individuals to achieve their goals, knowing that I've made a difference is incredibly rewarding. Additionally, the collaborative nature of social work, where I can work alongside various stakeholders to effect systemic change, brings me immense satisfaction.

Have you always known that you wanted to work in this field, or did your career aspirations evolve over time?

My journey into social work was influenced by my upbringing and the values instilled by my family. While I initially pursued other interests, my passion for social justice and community service ultimately led me to this fulfilling career path.

What challenges have you encountered along the way, and how have they shaped your journey in this profession?

There have been numerous challenges, from navigating complex family dynamics to dealing with bureaucratic hurdles within the system. However, each challenge has presented an opportunity for growth and learning. These experiences have reinforced the importance of resilience, empathy, and adaptability in social work. They've also highlighted the need for systemic change to address underlying issues and support vulnerable individuals and families more effectively.

How do you see the role of social work evolving in the future, and how do you hope to contribute to that evolution?

In the future, I envision social work playing a more proactive role in addressing social inequalities and advocating for systemic change. I hope to contribute by continuing to provide high-quality, person-centred support to individuals and families, while also advocating for policy changes and greater investment in social services. Additionally, I aim to mentor and empower the next generation of social workers, fostering a culture of compassion, resilience, and social justice within the profession.

What advice would you give to someone considering entering this profession?

My advice would be to stay true to your values, remain open-minded and adaptable, and never underestimate the power of empathy and human connection. Social work can be challenging, but it's also incredibly rewarding and impactful. It requires resilience, patience, and a genuine commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others. Embrace the diversity of experiences you will encounter, continuously educate yourself, and seek support when needed. Remember, even the smallest gestures of kindness and understanding can create significant change in someone's life.
